History of the Asbestos Issue

Where We Go From Here

If ever an issue was ripe for congressional action, it is the need to deal with the asbestos litigation nightmare. Too many victims have gone uncompensated, too many families have suffered and too many companies have been hurt for Congress not to act.

Even back in 1991, when the issue had taken on such an urgency that the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court appointed a special panel to study the problem, the route to the solution was clear. The Ad Hoc Committee on Asbestos Litigation stated succinctly, "The committee recognizes that virtually all of the issues relating to a so-called 'national solution' are primarily matters of policy for the Congress." The time has come for Congress to enact a legislative solution for this crisis — an action that benefits everyone.
